Radical Prostatectomy

Radical Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the entire prostate gland, surrounding tissues, and seminal vesicles to treat prostate cancer that is confined to the prostate. In some cases, nearby lymph nodes may also be removed to evaluate the spread of cancer. This procedure is most effective for patients with localized or locally advanced prostate cancer.

Indications for Radical Prostatectomy

  • Localized Prostate Cancer: Cancer confined to the prostate without spreading to other organs.
  • Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer: Cancer that has extended beyond the prostate but remains within nearby structures.
  • Younger Patients with Good Health: Suitable for those with a long life expectancy.
  • Failed Radiation Therapy: As a salvage procedure in cases of recurrent cancer.

How is Radical Prostatectomy Performed?

  • Preoperative Evaluation:Imaging , PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) Test and Biopsy Confirmation
  • Anesthesia: Performed under general or spinal anesthesia.

Complications and Risks

  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Urethral Stricture
  • Infection or Bleeding

Benefits of Simple Prostatectomy

  • Complete Removal of Cancerous Tissue: Reduces the risk of cancer recurrence.
  • Effective Treatment for Localized Prostate Cancer: Provides a high cure rate.
  • Improved Long-Term Survival: Especially for younger patients with localized cancer.
  • Minimally Invasive Options Available: Faster recovery, less pain, and fewer complications with laparoscopic and robotic approaches.

Radical Prostatectomy is a definitive treatment option for localized or locally advanced prostate cancer that effectively removes cancerous tissue and offers a high chance of cure. With advanced techniques such as robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP), patients experience faster recovery, reduced complications, and better functional outcomes.
