TURBT

Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is a common procedure used to diagnose and treat bladder cancer, involving the removal of tumors from the bladder lining through the urethra using a specialized instrument called a resectoscope.

What is TURBT ?

TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to diagnose, stage, and treat bladder tumors. It is the gold standard for managing non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and involves removing abnormal growths or tumors from the bladder lining using a resectoscope.

Purpose of TURBT

  • Diagnosis: To confirm the presence of bladder cancer and determine the tumor type, grade, and stage.
  • Staging: To assess how deep the tumor has invaded the bladder wall.
  • Treatment: To remove superficial tumors and prevent their progression.
  • Surveillance: To manage and monitor recurrent bladder tumors.

When is TURBT Recommended?

  • Presence of hematuria (blood in urine) suggesting bladder cancer.
  • Abnormal findings on imaging (ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI).
  • Suspicious lesions observed during cystoscopy.
  • For recurrent bladder tumors after prior treatment.

Benefits of TURBT

  • Accurate Diagnosis and Staging
  • Minimally Invasive Procedure
  • Effective Initial Treatment
  • Short Hospital Stay and Quick Recovery

TURBT is an essential procedure in the management of bladder cancer. It is safe, effective, and offers accurate diagnosis, staging, and treatment of bladder tumors. With regular follow-up and appropriate adjuvant therapy, TURBT significantly improves the prognosis for patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.
