TURP, BNI

Urinary obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and bladder neck contractures is a common condition in men, especially with advancing age. TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) and BNI (Bladder Neck Incision) are two well-established urological procedures aimed at relieving bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and improving urinary flow. TURP is the gold standard for treating moderate to severe BPH, while BNI is used for managing bladder neck contractures and high bladder neck obstructions.

TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate)

  • Purpose: To relieve urinary obstruction by removing excess prostate tissue that is causing blockage.
  • Procedure: A resectoscope (a thin scope) is inserted through the urethra into the prostate, and an electrical loop is used to shave away the obstructing tissue.
  • Ideal for: Larger prostates.

Bladder Neck Incision (BNI)

  • Purpose: To relieve urinary obstruction by making a cut in the bladder neck, which is the area where the bladder connects to the urethra.
  • Procedure: A cystoscope is used to visualize the bladder neck, and a small incision is made to widen the opening.
  • Ideal for: Smaller prostates.

TURP and BNI are well-established, minimally invasive procedures that effectively address different causes of bladder outlet obstruction. TURP remains the gold standard for BPH treatment, offering long-lasting symptom relief, while BNI is the preferred intervention for managing bladder neck contractures.
